School Daze shares the amusing and engaging story of Johnny Corboy’s educational journey through the 1950s and 1960s. He began at Loyola University in Chicago, intending to major in communication. However, a chance encounter with a cat dissector shifted his path entirely, leading him to pre-med studies and a career in medicine.
Corboy recounts his rigorous pre-med training at Loyola, a transformative summer as an exchange student in Germany, motorcycle adventures, and return visits to Hawai‘i. His story continues with medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he lived in a fraternity house and completed his internship at Rush-Presbyterian. During this time, he also met and married Mary Jo Stelk.
The couple moved to California after Johnny was drafted by the Selective Service during the Vietnam era. He was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station in San Diego and later served as the Medical Officer in Charge of the U.S. Public Health Service Border Quarantine Station in San Ysidro.
As newlyweds, Johnny and Mary Jo embraced life in Coronado, California. They built friendships with Navy families, bought a small boat for weekend outings, enjoyed camping trips, and took a memorable tour of Europe.
After several years practicing family medicine, Corboy chose to specialize in ophthalmology, focusing on medical and surgical care of the eyes and following the path of his father. He was accepted into the highly regarded ophthalmology residency program at Washington University School of Medicine.
